Snow Day, Ultramarathons and running barefoot ?

Today is a snow day, luckily I was prepared with all the baking/cooking from yesterday and all the better shopping I do now that I am eating better. I went out to shovel again, since we have like 2 feet of snow or something insane like that. My younger one joined me for a bit, but my older one wants NOTHING to do with the snow, don't really blame her as I prefer a sunny beach anyday.

You would think on a snow day I would feel all ready to do laundry, clean, organize, i mean we have NO WHERE to go. BUT NO, I am still in my PJ"S (yes I shoveled in them) and really just hanging out.

I am currently reading the book Born to Run, hubby got me it for christmas. I am enjoying it, however it talks about ULTRA MARATHONS and I gotta admit I don't get it. I don't understand the concept ? why ? how ? who ? what ? where and when ? so if anyone wants to enlighten me feel free. do you ultra ? do you know someone who ultras ?

  1. My father-in-law used to do the ultra's. I think he is crazy. He is 65+ yrs old and just did a 50 MILER last year. It's funny, b/c to look at him you'd NEVER think he is in shape at all...unless beer gut is a shape? But he does them.

  2. Sorry about all the snow, it is actually like 50 degrees here today!! It feels so nice :)

Um, no thanks on the ultra's. I can barely talk myself into a half marathon! I get bored after 4 miles I can't imagine running 50 miles. Maybe I will check out that book, it may give some motivation.

  4. I am curious to read that book! I don't want to do an ultra-marathon myself, but its seems like it would be a neat topic---like reading about eating contests where people eat 100 hotdogs or whatever.

  5. I think it's great that you stayed in your PJ's all day...that is what snow days are all about!

Although I loved "Born to Run," I don't think I would ever have the time to train and do an ultramarathon. However, I have started running barefoot (on the treadmill) every now and then. I've actually worked up to a mile barefoot...woohoo! I don't think I'll ever be a true barefoot runner (stepping on rocks and glass..ouch!), but I am planning on getting some Vibram Five Fingers this spring! We'll see how they go!

  7. As the girl that is freaking about completing her first half-marathon, I can't even conceive of an Ultra. I will check out the book, too- I need all the motivation I can get!

  9. I know people who do ultras and they are not crazy, just extremely disciplined. I read that book too! really enjoyed it, but I agree, that kind of endurance is not for me. I mean, maybe if I didn't have a life or something. my husband bought a pair of those toe shoes and thinks they have helped with his plantar fasciitis.
